PM Calls on Citizens to Obey Traffic Laws and Be Careful of Starting Fires on Chinese New Year

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen has called on drivers to respect traffic laws and avoid traffic accidents during the upcoming Chinese and Lunar New Year. He has also warned citizens to be careful of starting fires.

The Prime Minister made these remarks because he is concerned about traffic accidents that often occur during the festival time. During a meeting with about 1,200 construction workers at the site of the new Techo Santepheap National Hospital on Thursday morning, 19 January 2023, he said “Do not let this New Year become one where others are happy, but you suffering.”

The Prime Minister appealed to all citizens to respect traffic laws, and said that even though it is the Chinese New Year, Cambodians also get drunk and can cause traffic accidents.

"Let’s enjoy the Chinese New Year, which people of Chinese descent are happy to do, but we need to avoid traffic accidents," he said.

The Prime Minister has also called on people to be careful of starting fires from negligence of candles lit when making offerings to the gods and ancestors.
